Recently published by San Francisco's Rock Out Books, "Naked Ambition" is 224 pages of mainstream porn putting its best face forward, and giving us a good long look at the (sometimes shocking) unretouched results. Large, sharp, well-composed images of porn performers sans post-production Photoshop are endlessly fascinating. Don't get me wrong, it's a slick package of Pornywood glamour, and my porn performer friends have a special, lubed-up place in my heart. The book is fancy: Everyone is polished and spackled, the accompanying text by Lonn Friend and Rob Hill is just as polished and spackled, and the intros are by celebs Larry Flynt and (inexplicably) Dave Navarro.

Unlike Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, who shot porn stars with (and without) everyday clothes in his studio for "XXX: 30 Porn-Star Portraits" (with Gore Vidal), Grecco purposefully shot the performers in context, within their natural habitat, at the yearly gathering place for mainstream porn, the AVN Awards and convention in Las Vegas.
