“The patient can be anxious — they may remember only a third of what
was told to them,” said Dr. Rod Rohrich, the chairman of plastic surgery
at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. Three
of his patients, Jeanette Probandt, Janet Allison, both of Midland,
Tex., and a third woman who did not want to be identified have not only
shared the consultation experience. They have also scheduled surgery
within weeks of one another. “We’ve always gone to one another’s appointments,”
Mrs. Probandt said. “All three of us went in together for all our consultations.
He’ll talk to one person. The rest of us are quiet.” Then, she said,
the surgeon checks each woman in order.
