Ms. Lewis said that coming with a friend in tow is part of what she
calls the increasing “de-medicalization” of cosmetic surgery. “We used
to only say it about Brazil, that ‘having plastic surgery in Rio is
like having your nails done,’ ” Ms. Lewis said. “Now the same can be
said about New York and Los Angeles and Miami and about 10 other places
I can think of.” In her consultancy, Ms. Lewis said, she has seen a
buddy monopolize the conversation to such an extent that the prospective
patient didn’t receive the information she needed. And she has heard
buddies spout what she perceived as untruths born of competition — “You
don’t need lipo” or “I don’t see a line on your face.” Yet she and the
doctors interviewed also point out that there are benefits to having
a friend with whom to chat things over or even go through surgery with,
to help share the cost of the recovery room and a nurse.
