From Brisbane's Courier-Mail Dec. 18, 2007:

[Neil] Strauss promises that if you follow his instructions to the letter, you will have a date in 30 days.

His mission is to transform those suffering from a crippling lack of confidence so they can approach strangers who look interesting to talk to.

Before the reader even gets to try to crack on to a girl, however, there is work to do: A series of preliminary exercises over seven days.

On day two, for example, daters-in-training have to make eye contact with five strangers and record their eye colour. Day three's task is to ring up a random number and try to get whoever answers the phone to recommend a good movie.

You can stop when you get a movie recommendation from three separate people.

Strauss says such tasks are an attempt to break down self-limiting thinking and open up the reader to the possibility that they actually might be a worthwhile individual, a sense Strauss tries to instil in people within seven days.

That is when you learn the art of the approach.

The approach is not just a manoeuvre, it is a way of being. Before you can adopt the approach you must have the self-confidence to adopt it. And, above all, you must not look too needy.

Standing there ogling and evaluating women will only make you seem desperate and creepy and not that interesting, fun or worth meeting.

"From the second you walk in, be engrossed in animated conversation with your friends: smile, laugh, have fun and enjoy one another's company," Strauss advises.

Don't hesitate. The art of the approach is the art of spontaneity. Just turn around and start a conversation.

Smile, even if it doesn't come naturally, and don't be afraid to approach groups that include men.

"The more men that are in the group, the less likely it is that the women in it have been approached," Strauss says.

"You would be surprised at how often the guys they're with aren't actually boyfriends or husbands."

Strauss also has a great tip for getting a girl's phone number.

First, offer to give her your information and take out a piece of paper and pen and tear the paper in half. Write your name and number on the first scrap and hand her the blank half with the pen.

"She'll accept them; it would be rude not to," he writes.

"Four times out of five, she'll write down her name and number."
